Silks & Crystals

Our Pure Silk Necktie, embroidered with a flower motif is Black/Red and makes a stunning statement; just perfect for that special occasion in your life or to give as a gift to the one you love. The richness of the fabric is difficult to convey in an image, which doesn't capture fully, the way the light makes the tie come alive. You can order a small fabric sample first, to experience the true beauty which must be seen and felt, or you can simply add the tie to your basket, after choosing the size you require.

The finest tie you can buy is a hand-stitched, 3-piece construction, which has been cut on the bias. Interlining should also be cut on the bias so that it moves with your tie. Many companies get 3 ties to a metre of fabric as opposed to the 1 tie you get from cutting on the bias...sadly, it's purely cost driven. Our ties are cut on the bias, in 3 sections and they are hand stitched.

What differentiates ours from the rest? The quality of the materials we use to construct the new addition to your wardrobe and the workmanship we put into it. We truly believe that you should not only look and feel good in your Silks & Crystals purchase, but that you should also have an understanding of what makes it special as well! Your journey to owning one begins here...Hand Made in the Scottish Highlands, especially for you!

Some factors to consider when making a Tie purchase:

Any creation is only as good as what goes into it, and we use nothing but the finest of materials.

The Shell
Silks & Crystals make the shell (outside) of your tie using only the finest pure silk fabrics, from one of the world leaders, James Hare. It has a 3-piece construction of blade, tail and neck and, most importantly, has been cut on the bias to ensure that it hangs straight and drapes well.

We take the interlining of your tie as seriously as we take the shell; many ties completely neglect this and use a cheap polyester lining. A quality lining helps your tie to drape nicely. If the lining is wrong, you will not be able to tie a nice knot and get a nice dimple. We use pure wool, cut on the bias, one of the best natural materials you can use. The interlining should also be attached to the shell so that it doesn't float around, causing your tie to lose it's shape. Thickness is not a hallmark of the quality of your tie; it requires to be matched to the fabric used for the shell.

We use 100% pure silk thread to hand stitch your tie. Investing in a quality thread is important; it's what holds your accessory together after all!

The stitching of your necktie is all done by hand using a fairly high stitch density to give more anchor points, therefore causing less stress on the seam. A high quality necktie is always hand sewn and should be complete with a tie bar. Why is a hand stitched tie better than a machine sewn one? Because machine stitches are too tight and inflexible, resulting in your tie not hanging or draping properly. It needs to have room to move which, only hand stitching can provide.

Blade and Tail Lining (Your Tie Tips)
All our ties are self-tipped unless stated or requested otherwise; this in turn, not only gives your tie a nicer finish, but also helps it to hang better. A cheaper tie will usually use either an artificial taffeta or acetate to line the tip.

Bar Tack
A Bar Tack is another hallmark of a quality tie; it is used to close the shell at the blade and the tail.

Probably the least important factor to many and certainly doesn't have any bearing on whether its a quality tie or not! The tie 'Keeper' is to enable you to slip the tail through the loop at the blade end. It's very much a personal choice though; some people love them, others hate them, but our ties can include one if you wish. It is made from the same silk as the rest of your tie. We make it simple for you and leave it to your own choice!

Why not have yours embellished with the purest us to discuss your requirements.

We offer a Sample Service where you can order a small piece of the fabrics before making your purchase. It's important to us that you are going to love your purchase. You may equally be happy with the colours and fabrics as you know them or see them on our website. An image can never convey the true look and feel of this truly beautiful, natural, and hypo-allergenic fabric. You are also welcome to visit our Studio which at present is by appointment only, where you can browse through the entire James Hare Collection of samples at your leisure.

Made In Scotland

Silks & Crystals Made with Love for You

We are a micro-sized family run business and not a large mass-producing company. All the accessories we make are made with our customer at the heart of it. When we make your accessories, they are made with love and care to deliver a quality result for you. Some items may take about 4 hours to make, others several days...

When we embellish our products, we do it in a 'less is more' way, using only the finest and smallest, crystals. They simply accentuate, the stunningly beautiful pure silk fabrics we use from James Hare, for which they are, and have been, so famous since 1865. A story of small beginnings with nothing but experience, and understanding of the needs of the tailoring trade, James Hare began the business alone, distributing cloth purchased from small weavers.

If you would like a fabric sample before making your purchase, we have made this available to you on all relevant products. Simply take the SAMPLE option from the drop-down menus on the fabric products and we will be delighted to send this to you. It's important to us that you know exactly what you are buying, before you buy. If you already know, please feel free to simply purchase.

Many products are ready to ship within 48 hours, with many others not taking much longer. Obviously there are busy times of the year such as Christmas and the wedding season, when items may take a little longer but you will be kept updated in the unlikely event of significant delays. The key is to order in plenty of time before you need the item, especially if its for a gift or special occasion. That's not to say we haven't produced a white rabbit or two when required, so...if in doubt, please just ask us anyway.

You can also choose to have your item gift boxed (and sent direct to your recipient) if you're planning a surprise for someone special. Don't know what to choose? Not sure about colour? You could purchase one of our Gift Vouchers and let them choose themselves.
