Over the years, Prym Haberdashery have extended their range of sewing and craft products, as well as accessories, for the fashion and clothing industry. In the beginning, the ingenious improvement to the simple press fastener (invented in 1885 by Heribert Bauer), was carried out by Hans Prym in 1903 and has since become a worldwide standard!
In the UK a haberdasher is someone who sells small articles for sewing such as ribbons, zips, buttons and small tools. In the USA it is a retailer who sells clothing! The corresponding term in the USA is notions!
The word haberdasher appears in Chauser's Canterbury Tales; derived from the Anglo-French word hapertas which means small ware. Saint Louis IX, King of France 1226-70, is the patron saint of French haberdashers. Saint Nicholas remains the patron saint in Belgium and elsewhere in Continental Europe. Saint Catherine on the other hand was adopted by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers in the City of London.
